Straight Talk from a Duhawk

Throughout my years here at Loras, I have truly grown in all aspects. I can’t think of any other place that I would have wanted to spend my four years at. Loras is my home and means the world to me. I’ve been able to play football, anchor for LCTV, sing in Duhawkappella and lead as an RA, and I have learned a lot about what it takes to have great leadership through all my experiences. The friendships, relationships and connections that I have made at Loras will be unforgettable.

The students I am blessed to encounter in the classroom, in conversations that pop up in unplanned venues, in travel for service and study abroad, and yes, in prayer together, are looking for teachers and mentors whose words and way of life hang together—and are quick to detect when this is not the case. They are not afraid to pose questions about life’s meaning and purpose, and then to allow the responses they receive to claim their hearts, to shape their own seeking and life commitments. They are less interested in impressing others than they are in doing something significant for and with them.

I try to share with students the same passion, love and fascination I have for biology and the natural environment around me. I strive to keep students excited and offer opportunities to experience biology–see something new and wonder what it is, how it works and why it’s there–challenge them, and encourage them to see things from a different perspective, one they may not have considered before, so they can think globally and act locally, especially in the context of environmental sustainability. Really, I teach to give them an opportunity to live our tagline. To be more. Be Loras.
