The Dr. Scholl Foundation, Northbrook, Ill., has awarded Loras College a $20,000
grant to fund Dr. Scholl Internship Away Scholarships. The opportunities for students to gain valuable experience through internships have grown significantly in recent years. In any given semester, students leave campus for internships in Dubuque, across the U.S., and in other countries. For young people, these possibilities to apply classroom learning to the “real world” are invaluable. In addition, in an increasingly diverse global society, living and working in a new cultural environment also is educational.
Unfortunately, internships – both domestic and international - can be financially prohibitive for many students. Internships typically come with added expenses above and beyond tuition and room and board costs. To date, 53 students have benefitted from previous Dr. Scholl Internship Away Scholarships and have gained experience in places that include the Bayswater Family Center in London, Disney in Orlando, Fla., and Hostal Mexico in Santiago De Compostela, Spain. These awards assist with the cost of housing, food and transportation.
To benefit the largest number of interns possible, the Dr. Scholl Internship Away Scholarship is awarded at varying levels, based on need. Students competing for scholarships are selected through an application process that also includes past performance and the estimated quality of the proposed internship experience.
