Loras College eDUcation Club Celebrates Diversity

11/18/2013

The Loras College eDUcation Club is promoting the acceptance, respect and full inclusion of youth with disabilities November 18-22 through the student-led “I Am Norm” campaign.

In January, 2010, the “I Am Norm” national youth inclusion campaign was founded when twenty young people, with and without disabilities, met in Washington, D.C. for the first time. Although the group came from different backgrounds and locations, they all shared the common belief that diversity is strength and discrimination, weakness.

“The eDUcation Club is bringing the “I Am Norm” campaign to Loras to help individuals shed the perceptions of normalcy and learn to embrace and appreciate diversity,” said Alli Settanni (’15) (Burlington, Ill.), club president.  “Learning is a social process; our members are learning the importance of inclusion and how we, as future teachers, can emphasize everyone’s strengths and abilities.”

To celebrate diversity and rise above fear and prejudice, the eDUcation Club is hosting a series of events, including:

  • Who is Norm? Friday, November 15 through Tuesday, November 19, the eDUcation Club will ask students, faculty and staff, “Who is Norm?” In addition, the club will screen “Lars and the Real Girl” at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 18 in the Curriculum Library of the Wahlert Education Building.

  • Learn more. At 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, Megan Redmond (’15) (Bernard, Iowa) will present information on transitional services in the Arizona Room of the Alumni Campus Center.

  • Bring your buddy to the game. The eDUcation Club is partnering with Du-Buddies, a Loras organization that seeks to foster authentic relationships between students and members of the Dubuque community with intellectual disabilities, to watch the Loras Women’s Basketball team take on St. Norbert on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Athletic Wellness Center. The group is meeting in the Alumni Campus Center, Marie Graber Ballroom, at 6:30 p.m. to walk to the game.

  • An Ability Celebration will take place Thursday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Alumni Campus Center, Marie Graber Ballroom. Students will share their stories of or with disabilities in the classroom.

  • What the students think. On Friday, November 22, at 6:00 p.m. in the Alumni Campus Center Marie Graber Ballroom, the eDUcation Club will host a 4th grade class from Bryant Elementary and share the Loras response to “Who is Norm?”
