Loras College will host a tree planting celebration on the new Loras Parkway on May 15, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. This celebration is in honor of the $4,086 grant awarded to the College by Alliant Energy and Trees Forever, through the Branching Out program, to plant 19 trees on Loras Parkway. This event is free and open to the public.
During the celebration, faculty, staff and student volunteers will plant, mulch and water the honey locusts, arborvitae and burgundy maples. This will be followed by a ceremony led by Anastacia McDermott
(’03), Loras College coordinator for peace and justice, and remarks from Jim Collins
(’84), Loras College president, Shannon Ramsey, founding president and CEO of Trees Forever, and Lisha Coffey, regional director of customer operations for Alliant Energy, culminating with an original nature-based reading from Kevin Koch
(’81), Ph.D., Loras College chair of division of language and literature. Refreshments and a small reception will conclude the event.
This tree celebration reflects the College’s commitment to sustainable, eco-based programs. Not only will these trees add greatly to the parkway’s visual appeal, but they also will assist in reducing heat island effect and help insulate nearby buildings. Additionally, research has shown that having physical or visual access to a treed landscape can help workers deal with fatigue and can increase student attention spans.
The Branching Out grant program is offered exclusively to Iowa communities where Alliant Energy provides electric and/or natural gas services.
