Loras College presents Opera and Musical Theater Scenes

4/28/2014

Loras College students will present scenes from eight well-known operas and musicals on Friday, May 2 and Saturday May 3, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Performances will take place in St. Joseph’s Auditorium in Hoffmann Hall on the Loras College campus. The performance is free and open to the public, and features scenes by American composers Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, and Leonard Bernstein, as well as works by W.A. Mozart, and Gilbert & Sullivan. The scenes will be performed in English.

The students, who are enrolled in an opera/musical theater workshop course, have been learning how to incorporate the skills of acting and singing. Jennifer Swanson, associate professor of music and instructor of the course, will introduce each scene. “The Opera Workshop course provides an opportunity for young singers to learn how to combine acting and singing. They prepare and perform short scenes from operas and musicals as a way to gain experience onstage and learn how to put music and acting together,” she explained.

“Being involved in the Opera Workshop is just as enjoyable as it is a learning experience. My two characters are particularly fun because they are so different from one another, so it was challenging in the sense of getting to know what kind of people they are so that I may distinguish them in the way I act and talk when portraying them. I believe I can speak for all of us when I say that I am very excited to perform these scenes in front of an audience because we’ve all worked very hard,” explained senior Andrea Berns (’14) (Cedar Falls, Iowa).

Jennifer Kasel (’16) (Dubuque, Iowa) said, “For me, Opera Workshop has been a very unique, thrilling opportunity to perform operatic music outside of the context of voice lessons and recitals. It's allowed me to bring songs that I love to life on the stage with my fellow Duhawks and can't wait to share our hard work with the public.”

Student performers include Berns, Kasel, Jessica Fino (’14) (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Andrew Hoerth (’14) (Chilton, Wis.), Mike Okas (’16) (Verona, Wis.), Anne Spoden (’16) (Guttenberg, Iowa), Sarah Statz (’17) (DeForest, Wis.), Emily Gignac (’15) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Blake Hussey (’17) (Waterloo, Iowa), Anne-Marie Elsinger (’17) (Woodstock, Ill.), Kyle Marugg (’15) (Worthington, Iowa), Andrea Berns (’14), Devin Gackle (’14) (Lake Villa, Ill.), Maddison Barnard (’17) (Pekin, Ill.), and Seabelo Montwedi (’14) (Gaborone, Botswana). The students will be accompanied on the piano by Rochelle Rochelle.
