Loras College is hosting the Summer Leadership institute today and tomorrow in the Alumni Campus Center. Loras College's 2012 Summer Leadership Institute gathers church leaders and ministers to explore the theme "Empowering Participation." The Second Vatican Council affirmed the laity's essential role in both the church and the world. As the church celebrates the council's fiftieth anniversary, the Institute will explore how parishes empower the laity's participation in light of current opportunities and challenges.
Bob Hurd, Ph.D. will offer a daylong workshop entitled "Called to Communion and Mission: Music and the Spirituality of the Eucharist" as well as two other sessions: "Unity in Diversity: Celebrating Bilingually" and "Taking Stock: Communion and Mission in a Polarized Church." Zeni Fox, Ph.D. will offer a plenary session entitled "Full, Conscious, and Active Participation" and a workshop, "Collaboration: Key to Full Participation." In addition, Loras College faculty and staff will be joined by local ministers in presentations on topics ranging from facilitating participation through technology to empowering parishes for community engagement.
Dr. Bob Hurd has served as a teacher, composer and liturgist in various pastoral and academic settings, including the Franciscan School of Theology, Berkeley, California; the Graduate Pastoral Ministries Program at Santa Clara University; and St. Patrick Seminary, Menlo Park, California. His liturgical music is published by OCP and is featured in numerous hymnals in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia.
Dr. Zeni Fox is Professor of Pastoral Theology at Seton Hall University. She is the author of New Ecclesial Ministry: Lay Professionals Serving the Church; the editor of Lay Ecclesial Ministry: Pathways Toward the Future; and co-editor of Called and Chosen: Toward a Spirituality for Lay Leaders. She lectures frequently throughout the country on these topics.
The Institute runs on two tracks, with liturgical musicians meeting from June 25-27 and parish ministers and leaders meeting from June 26-27. A schedule of events may be found at www.loras.edu/parishleadership.
