Clinical Staff
Nate Newman – Program Director
Nate Newman started working with the athletic training education program as an instructor in 2005. He was promoted to the position of program director in 2010. He is responsible for the overall direction of the program, maintaining our accreditation status and teaching classes in athletic training and sport science. During the past few years, Newman has grown the program to the largest enrollment and helped students gain regional and national recognition within the profession. He was honored in 2011 with the Iowa Athletic Trainers’ Society Educator of the Year award. Newman has degrees from the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University. He is currently working on his doctoral degree at the University of Northern Iowa. Nate resides in Dubuque with his wife, Diana and son, Bennett.
Dr. David Field – Medical Director
Dr. David Field serves as the medical director for the Loras Athletic Training program. He is a great resource to the program. The students interact with him in several capacities. The students will learn from him during guest lectures, by observing with him during his sports medicine clinic and also by observing some of the surgeries he performs on his patients.
Chris Kamm – Head Athletic Trainer/Preceptor
Kamm, a native of Waukon, Iowa began working with the Loras athletic training program in 2011. Prior to coming to Loras, Chris was at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa - who partnered with Luther College of the Iowa Conference. With Winneshiek Medical Center, Kamm worked with the football, basketball, track and field, soccer, and baseball teams with the Norse as well as multiple area high schools. Kamm has degrees from Central College and Northern Michigan University. Chris is responsible for supervising students during the clinical rotations with football, men’s basketball and baseball. He also serves as a mentor to some of the senior students each year as they prepare for the Board of Certification exam.
Adam Burke – Assistant Athletic Trainer/Preceptor
Adam began his first year on the Athletic Training staff for the Duhawks in 2010-11. He is primarily responsible for supervising students during their clinical rotations with men's soccer, women's basketball and softball. He earned his bachelor's degree in Athletic Training in 2009 from Loras College and is finishing up his Master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa.
During his time at the University of Northern Iowa, the Charlotte, Iowa native worked as a graduate assistant for the Cedar Valley Youth Soccer Association and also for the UNI team Orthopedic.
Burke's resume includes an internship with the NFL's St. Louis Rams and also four summers working at Loras College All-Sports Camp. Burke resides in Dubuque.
Katie Homan – Assistant Athletic Trainer/Preceptor
Homan, a native of Coldwater, Ohio began working with Loras College students in 2010. Katie previously worked at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where she recently earned her master's degree in Exercise and Sports Science with a specialization in Athletic Training. She is also a 2008 graduate of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. With the Cardinals, Homan played basketball threw the shot put and discus for their track and field team. While working on her master's at the University North Carolina, she worked with the women's basketball and rowing teams. She's also spent time with numerous summer camps and interned with Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida in 2009. Homan works primarily with students during their clinical rotations with the cross country and volleyball teams in the fall, the wrestling team in the winter, and the track and field teams in the spring.
Michala Lensing – Assistant Athletic Trainer/Preceptor
Michala Lensing began working with the Loras College athletic training program in the fall of 2011. She is a 2011 graduate of the Loras athletic training program and is excited to continue to be apart of the Loras community. Her responsibilities include supervising students in rotations with women’s soccer, indoor track and swimming. Michala is a native of Calmar, IA.
Susan Theisen – Athletic Trainer/Preceptor
Susan is an Approved Clinical Instructor for athletic training students when they are assigned to the Western Dubuque and Dyersville Beckman High Schools. She works to supervise and guide athletic training students as they rotate through one of three high school settings within the program. Susan has been working at both Western Dubuque and Beckman High Schools for 10 years. Prior to arriving in the Dubuque area, Susan attended the University of Northern Iowa where she received her bachelor’s degree. Upon graduation she worked at several clinics/high schools throughout Western Wisconsin. She resides in Dyersville, IA with her husband, Lyle and her three children, Landon, Lauren and Lillianna. She states that she thoroughly enjoys working as an ACI with the “motivated” students from Loras College.
Allison Swift – Athletic Trainer/Preceptor
Allison is a 2010 alum of the Loras Athletic Training program. She now works at the Galena High School as an athletic trainer. She began working with Galena High school in 2012.
Aaron Herbst – Athletic Trainer/Preceptor
Aaron provides the athletic training students with an excellent off campus rotation. He works with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, a USHL hockey team. Herbst began working with the Saints in the fall of 2012. Prior to joining the Saints, he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the Unversity of Iowa.
Jason Meyer – Physical Therapist
Jason is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa. He has a certification in the Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization (ASTYM). He works and owns Dubuque Physical Therapy. Loras College athletic training students will spend 10 hours working with Jason during their junior year. They may spend more hours with Meyer depending upon their individual interests.
Dr. Dan Johnson – Chiropractor
Dan Johnson, D.C., is a Loras College alum. After graduating in 2005, Dr. Johnson entered Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He is a 2009 cum laude graduate of the school. While at Palmer, Dr. Johnson served as a Rehabilitation and Sports Injury Intern, performed Clinical Academic Rotations at the University of Iowa Veterans Administration Hospital and served on the Palmer Sports Council. Dan also received his certification in Active Release Technique, a soft tissue manipulation. Athletic training students complete 10 hours with Dr. Johnson during their junior year. The students can spend more time working with Dr. Johnson depending on their individual interests.
Dr. Vicki Souder - Chiropractor
Dr. Souder is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts, Western Illinois with a Master of Science and a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. During an internship program at the Pettibon Institute in St. Cloud, MN she learned how to restore curves using specific techniques and exercises. Vicki owns and operates her own clinic within the city of Dubuque. Athletic training students can complete a rotation with her during their junior year.
Luke Casey – Physician Assistant
Luke Casey is a Loras College alum and current Physician Assistant at Finley Hospital in Dubuque. He serves as a supervisor to athletic training students during their general medical rotation at Finley Hospital. This rotation is completed during their senior year.
