Loras Media students win BIG at IBNA

Showcasing the diversity of their talents, Loras Media Studies students were the hit of the evening at the 2012 annual Iowa Broadcast News Association convention in Iowa City. Loras students took home a staggering nine 1st place wins. "It's a testament to their work ethic and desire to tell the very best stories possible," said Jill Specht, coordinator of Media Operations. Entries were judged by professionals from across the nation.

In addition to their competition success two media studies majors also took home three scholarships. Junior Ellen Reiss was presented the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Don Shelby Journalism Scholarship for $2,500. Reiss also won IBNA's top student honor, the IBNA Dick Petrik Outstanding Student Award with a $500 scholarship.

First year student Mareah Adolphs was awarded the IBNA Grant Price Scholarship for $1,000. The honor recognizes outstanding broadcast promise at the freshman/sophomore level.

Student Documentary Scores Again!

The awards just keep coming. Senior, Jacob Spiekermeier, and junior, Lauren DeWitt, took home the Gold Eddy Award at the 2012 Cedar Rapids Film Festival. The producer/director duo also won for Best Documentary at the NBNA Award ceremony in Minneapolis. The film tells the powerful story of four women's life struggles and ultimate redemption with the women's housing organization, Manasseh House. Speikermeier and DeWitt completed the film in December 2011.

Media Students on a Roll

With their most successful year ever, Loras students left an indelible mark at the Northwest Broadcast News Association convention in Minneapolis in March taking home two Eric Savareid Awards and four Award of Merit honors. NBNA awards are open to all colleges and universities in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wisconsin.

The Best - 3 Years Running!

The www.iowacollegemedia.com/Iowa College Media Association named LCTV the Outstanding Collegiate Television Station in Iowa for the third year in a row. No other collegiate station has won the award since its inception in 2010. The honor was the culmination of another big night for the station - taking home nearly 75% of all television awards given, including Best Newscast and Best Sportscast.

Art & Dissent in the Czech Republic

How do artists mirror and shape political and cultural dissent? Dr. Paul Kohl, Professor MaryLynn Neuhaus and 25 students headed to Prague for nearly two weeks to study that very question in depth.

Photojournalists capture the moment

A full course of students took to the streets camera-ready this past January as part of Professor Patrick Pisarik's 'Photojournalism' course. If a picture is worth a thousand words, these students studied the techniques and photographic styles that result every time.

Filmmaking at the Beach

Question: What could be better than shooting on a beautiful day at the beach?
Answer: Shooting on a beautiful day at the beach while it's January cold back in Iowa.
As part of this year's Global Filmmaking J-term course, 14 media students headed to the Gulf Coast to shoot three original short films. Each group had three days to develop their script and then made the trek south to shoot on location for a week. The city of Mobile, Alabama opened its arms to the crew writing multiple newspaper stories on their filmmaking efforts. Upon return, each group had a week to edit their films which premiered publicly on the big-screen at Mindframe Theater. In April, all three shorts were screened in Alabama at the Mobile Arts Alive Festival in the downtown Mobile.
