Industry experts and approximately 160 professionals, all in one place, sharing information and trends in the analytics field that will revolutionize the way we do business. What more can you ask for?

The Loras College Center for Business Analytics hosted an inaugural Business Analytics Symposium at the Grand River Center on February 12, 2013. The event featured five industry experts-- Rich Clayton (’87), vice president of marketing, Oracle; Tim Suther (’82), chief marketing officer, Acxiom; David Pooley, vice president, Peloton Group; Chris Kohlmann, information systems manager, City of Dubuque; and Amy Mayer, vice president, CapGemini. Topics included “Where Mad Men Meet Math Men”, “Analytic Led Transformations”, “Best Practices in Financial Planning & Analysis”, “Assessing your Company’s Analytic IQ” and “Smarter Dubuque”.

The event was designed to help professionals get a better understanding of the best practices and applications for the use of analytics to drive business planning and decision making. “Data is only of value when it can be analyzed and converted into “Big Insights” to make directional changes, correct course or fuel better decision-making. New tools are continuously being introduced to take advantage of this avalanche of opportunities and information flow,” said Loras College President Jim Collins (’84).

Loras College and Greater Dubuque Development Corporation also announced the 2013 Data into Action Innovation Award winner during the symposium. The City of Dubuque’s Smarter Sustainable Dubuque program received the first innovation award. This award is designed to identify and honor companies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the field of business analytics.

Loras professor Hugh Graham, associate professor of business administration at Loras, along with Clayton, closed the symposium with a short presentation about the MBA program at Loras College that will be open to students starting this summer. Loras will be the first college in Iowa to offer a master’s of business administration in business analytics.
