EDUCATION OR PERFORMANCE
Loras College offers two primary music degree concentrations: education or performance. All students at Loras College, regardless of their major area of academic study, have the opportunity to grow as musicians through participation in choral and instrumental ensembles, to receive quality private instruction in band and orchestral instruments or in voice and to learn about music in classes such as Music Theory, Music History and related general education courses. Loras College is an official “All Steinway School,” offering students Steinway pianos to learn on. Many students, music majors and others, combine a music course of study with another degree program in preparation for their careers and/or graduate school.
EXPERIENCE THE MUSIC MAJOR
Loras College music students have had the opportunity to tour and participate in regional and international music festivals such as the 2008 Olympic Arts Festival in Beijing, China, and in concerts in Carnegie Hall in New York City, as well as abroad in countries such as Canada and Ireland Loras music students perform in local venues with Dubuque arts organizations such as the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and the Great River Wind Ensemble. Music majors also participate in the many performances of the Loras music ensembles such as Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble and other choral and instrumental ensembles.
Our majors successfully compete in the Iowa Region with the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and have performed in the Iowa Collegiate Honor Band as well as in the Collegiate Repertoire Choir of the American Choral Directors Association in regional conferences.
PREPARING FOR A MUSIC CAREER
In cooperation with the College’s Department of Education, Loras has developed a comprehensive music education degree program. The bachelor of arts in music with certification in education prepares students to serve as music teachers – classroom, choral and instrumental – on both the elementary and secondary school levels.
The bachelor of arts in music program with an emphasis in performance and pedagogy prepares students for advanced study on the graduate level and for careers in the profession of music such as private lesson instructors, liturgical music ministers, music therapists and studio musicians. Also, a music degree can prepare a student for careers in arts administration and even medicine! Music students from Loras have entered and completed prestigious graduate programs across the country, and developed significant and successful professional careers.
