The Limestone Review
literary/scholarly publication

Welcome to the current issue of Loras College’s literary/scholarly publication, The Limestone Review.

Loras College has a rich tradition of literary/scholarly student publications, of which The Limestone Review is merely the most recent chapter. The Spokesman first graced the College (then known as St. Joseph’s College) in 1903 and ran until 1970, when it was scuttled due to college censorship. In 1974 the College’s literary tradition was revived by Dr. Donna Bauerly with the first annual issue of Outlet. The year 1985 saw the initiation, again under Dr. Bauerly’s mentorship, of another student publication then called Loras College Delta Epsilon Sigma (DES) All-College Writing, later to be renamed Alpha.

Overlap in creative genres between Outlet and Alpha led the English Program and DES to merge them into a single literary/scholarly magazine. The co-sponsors announced a naming contest among students, faculty, and staff in the fall of 2009. The winning name, The Limestone Review, was submitted by Dave McDermott, Peace and Justice Coordinator for Campus Ministry, and an English: Literature graduate of 2001.

The name Limestone Review has significance on several levels. Limestone is the underlying bedrock of the Dubuque region. It serves as the foundation for many Loras College buildings. As such, The Limestone Review will serve as bedrock and foundation for the creative and scholarly work of future Loras College students. What’s more, beneath the surface, limestone is cavernous and filled with hidden natural wonders. We are certain that there are hidden wonders within our student writers as well.

It is hard to give up a name. Outlet and Alpha have had cherished traditions, as did The Spokesman before them. We hope The Limestone Review will add to the rich repository of Loras student writing.
