Special Education
Close support and advising is provided for Education majors from the first year through student teaching and getting a job. Division of Education maintains close relations with other departments offering teaching majors and also with area schools and agencies. This gives you a wide network of opportunities.
After sound preparation and modeling most people learn best by doing. All Loras Education programs offer a minimum of 100 clock hours of field experience prior to a full semester of student teaching.
Special Education, Instructional Strategist I
The Special Education program prepares candidates to work in general education, inclusive, and special education classrooms, kindergarten through sixth grade or in grades seven through twelve. Candidates at the secondary level are required to have an approved teaching minor.
Graduate Programs
LSACEL Principal Preparation Program
The Principal Preparation program (LSACEL, Loras/St.Ambrose Consortium for Educational Leadership) is designed for adults who work full time as teachers. This is a master’s level program that prepares candidates to work as effective administrators and school leaders.
Instructional Strategist I Endorsement Program
The Instructional Strategist endorsement program is designed for adults work full time as teachers. This is a graduate level program that prepares teachers to be licensed and work as special educators at the elementary or secondary levels.
The Division of Education is accredited by the State of Iowa and holds memberships in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education, and the Iowa Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
An independent survey of school principals employing first year Loras graduates elicited outstanding responses. These principals characterized Loras graduates’ knowledge of content, classroom management, and teaching skills with such words as "exceptional," "outstanding," and "focused."
