English:  Literature

The English Literature program offers breadth and depth, with a wide range of courses in British, American, European and world literature. New English majors learn the basics in a rigorous foundational course, Introduction to Literary Studies, and advanced students are challenged with courses in individual authors and Literary Criticism. Students have a variety of literature offerings to choose from every semester – a large-school array of classes in a small-school environment. They also benefit from small classes and the personal attention of professors.  Each senior works one-on-one with a faculty advisor to produce an extended portfolio of critical writing.

Literary Society: The Literary Society offers an opportunity to meet other students interested in literature in a social setting.  The Literary Society meets to discuss literature and film, to give feedback on student writing, to provide information about internships, and to perform community service.

Literary magazines: The Outlet is the Loras College literary magazine, published annually. Students may submit poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, and serve on the editorial staff. Alpha is an annual publication of writing across the curriculum sponsored by Delta Epsilon Sigma, the national Catholic Honors Society. Students may submit work to Alpha in the following genres: poetry, fiction, informal essay, and formal essay.

Experiential Learning:

  • English Majors frequently complete internships with Dubuque-area publishing companies and in marketing or public relations offices.
  • English majors frequent study abroad in the Ireland program.  Other study abroad opportunities have included England, South Africa, etc.
  • English majors may serve as Peer Writing Consultants for Loras College Writing Center.
