Mathematics

Majoring in Mathematics teaches you to think clearly and logically, to identify and solve problems and to express those solutions in a way that is understandable to others. These are skills that are useful in any field.  The Loras Mathematics program offers courses to students majoring in Mathematics and also to students in other areas looking to develop active learning and critical thinking skills. The committed and involved professors at Loras provide formal coursework to students who enter Loras under-prepared for college level math.

Students in Mathematics have repeatedly presented papers and won awards at a variety of conferences of national professional organizations.

Why consider a Mathematics Major or Minor?!

  • Majors in mathematics generally have very high average starting salaries. It's higher than the average salaries for persons who majored in business, communications studies, advertising, accounting, and many other majors.
  • According to the Jobs Related Almanac, nearly every one of the top 50 of 250 jobs ranked using the characteristics of income, job stress, job security, and work environment utilized mathematics skills to a large degree.
  • Math majors have virtually unlimited career opportunities, including careers in business, finance, management, government, industry, education,.... Many mathematics majors go on to receive advanced degrees in Law, Medicine, and other professional programs. There are many opportunities available to get practical experience before graduation through internships with companies such as IBM, Arthur Anderson, Eagle Window and Door and John Deere Dubuque Works. Of those who graduated from the program within the last decade, 100% reported obtaining employment or entry into graduate school within one year after graduation.
