Religious Studies/ Theology

Religious ideas and practices link people back to what is most important in their lives; theologies help them to understand how such links can be both true and mysterious.  The Loras program offers courses in both the study of religion and in theology, and in this way it helps students understand and articulate the faith they have experienced.  Organized within the Roman Catholic tradition of higher education, the program at Loras emphasizes three areas of inquiry: theological studies, biblical studies, and moral studies.

Religious Studies / Theology offers a major with a choice of two capstone opportunities:  a practicum experience for students wishing to participate in ministry in the Church, or a thesis for students who wish to pursue the academic study of religion and theology.  Students who major or double major in Religion and Theology are some of the most active students at Loras.  Religion and Theology majors are likely to study abroad and participate in service trips both nationally and internationally.  Because majors receive experience in situations that apply directly to their careers, 98% of all Religion and Theology majors find jobs in fields related to their course of study.  These majors benefit from a faculty that teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses and from a library that has outstanding resources—both paper and electronic collections.

Loras College Religious Studies takes pride in maintaining a strong emphasis on the Catholic tradition, Religious Studies seeks to offer the proper intellectual and academic witness to the sources of religious truth and meaning.

  • In its graduate program, the program is committed to the theological and pastoral formation of lay professionals serving the church.
  • In its major, the program seeks to provide a foundation for students to begin service to the church, or graduate work in theology or religious studies.
  • For non-majors, Religious Studies offers a selection of courses to afford a view of religion and its development, and to invite students to a deeper awareness of their own existence as religious persons.

Relgious Studies is committed to the global Mission, Vision and Goals of Loras College. It supports the Catholic identity of the college by striving to impart an understanding of Christian faith within the context of the growing treasury of human knowledge. The Religious Studies program is especially dedicated to the attempt to provide a framework for moral decision-making and Christian practice.
