Social Work
Social work is a professional career in which one strives to assist individuals and groups to seek out, strengthen, and identify their maximum potential. Social workers are leaders who help individuals and communities improve their own social and health conditions through the principle of personal empowerment. A degree in Social Work enables graduates to work with all members of society including children, teens, adults and the elderly. Required practicum experiences are available everywhere and the Dubuque community offers many opportunities for your time at Loras from tutoring students at all ages to working at homes for those with special needs. Since the field of social work is so vast and varied, local, state, national and international opportunities are available and encouraged throughout your Loras experience.
A social worker can be a school counselor, a probation officer, a child abuse investigator, a support group director or a domestic violence advocate, to name a few.
The social work program is to prepare students for generalist social work practice in a wide spectrum of social work positions. The program is dedicated to the development of the whole student, using a liberal arts approach, with special concern for the development of social work attitudes, values, and behavior. Social work majors prepare to carry out the program's mission by building on a core of basic studies, concentrated social work courses and complementary courses from other disciplines at Loras and Clarke Colleges.
