Spanish - Modern Languages and Cultures

Enhance your chosen career with an additional language!

The necessity for learning other languages is useful and appropriate for anyone interested in working in the United States due to the linguistic diversity of the US population and the number of companies that engage in international business. The study of other languages is equally important for anyone hoping to travel or work in another country. The Modern Languages and Cultures Program (MLC) is pleased to invite you to join us in the exploration of world languages and cultures. The program offers a major and a minor in Spanish; we also offer a variety of Spanish courses for students with various interests and backgrounds:

  1. introductory language classes for students who’ve never studied a language other than English
  2. mid- and upper level courses in language, culture and literature for students who are native or bilingual speakers or who have previous language experience
  3. courses for professional purpose
  4. courses offered in English about different cultures

In addition to Spanish courses applicable to the major/minor in Spanish, MLC/Spanish courses can be taken as elective credits.  Some MLC courses will also help you fulfill General Education requirements. All of our courses will provide you with opportunities to see the world from new and interesting perspectives. Popular international study opportunities are available through the Center for Experiential Learning.

We are very excited about our innovative course offerings in Spanish for the Professions that provide opportunities for students at all levels of language study to expand their career opportunities and understanding of global and international issues. We offer a series of introductory and intermediate level courses that assist in obtaining and/or refining general language skills for students interested in business, criminal justice,  health & social services . For majors and minors, we also offer more advanced level courses for students who wish to supplement their other majors or future career plans with classes that provide opportunities (site visits, practica, and special projects) to utilize their language skills in “real world” situations. For additional information, please contact the Division Chair, Dr. Kevin Koch (Kevin.Koch@loras.edu)

Spanish F.L.E.S. (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) program allows students to help area Elementary School students learn Spanish.

Study Abroad
Loras strongly encourages all students to participate in study abroad learning opportunities. Study in another country is a vital component of the language student’s college experience. There are many opportunities for Loras students to study outside the U.S. for a semester, a summer or a full academic year. Such study greatly enhances a student’s skills in the target language and brings the student into direct contact with another country’s culture(s).
