History
Loras College implemented its one-to-one mobile computing program in 2000 by beginning with faculty laptop distribution. We hired an instructional designer, implemented a web-based course management tool, upgraded our network infrastructure and servers, and installed wireless access points in all classrooms and common areas.
Technology Rich Campus
As part of our technology rich campus, all full time faculty and students are issued laptops. All residence halls are wired with a port per person, all of our classrooms are technology enhanced, we have a robust network and use an IP telephone system. As of Fall 2009 the residence halls will be wireless.
Laptop Distribution
As part of student orientation, students are issued the laptop, AC adapter and Ethernet cable. They sign a user agreement stating that they will take care of the laptop and what charges they may incur for both accidental and negligent use. We discuss proper care and responsible use of the laptop, configure their laptop and change passwords. We discuss where they can find support and how to stay in touch while off campus.
Repairs & Fees
The cost of the mobile computing program is $475 per semester. This fee includes the laptop, all network and printing resources, service, support and training. All repairs are handled on campus by A+/Lenovo certified repair technicians. Loras carries insurance on the laptops. Problems covered under warranty have no repair fees associated. There is a $75 deductible on accidental damage, a $400 deductible for theft and vandalism, and up to the full replacement cost due to intentional damage or neglect.
Other Recommendations
It is recommend that students check their e-mail accounts and portal announcements regularly because these are our only ways of communicating to everyone on campus. We also recommend that students LOCK their room doors to prevent thefts. We tell students that they are responsible for making regularly backups of their files to their network drives, CDs, or other external storage devices (USB memory key, flash drive, portable hard drive, etc.)
Additional Equipment
Some students choose to bring their own XP-compatible printer to campus. Most students choose to take advantage of our network printing capabilities. We strongly recommend that students bring external storage devices with them for backing up their non-academic files.
