Service has been a common thread among current students and alumni of Loras College. In big and small ways Duhawks are making an impact on the world around them. In September, Loras grads, parents and friends will be gathering to share in service with each other.
On Sunday, September 18, the Loras family will gather at SAME (So All May Eat) Café in Denver, Colorado to roll up their sleeves and make a difference. Libby (Whalen) Birky (’97) and her husband Brad, unveiled SAME Café in 2006. Their idea was to create a non-profit restaurant that operates on a pay-what-you-want model. There are no set prices, customers pick what they want to eat and then pay afterward, however much they wish. If you can’t pay anything, then they ask you to volunteer an hour helping in the cafe.
The Birky’s rely on volunteers in the community to help with cleaning, painting and anything else the restaurant may need. So three years ago, Duhawks in the area decided to pick a day to gather a group of Loras alumni to provide many extra hands to attack the never ending “to do” list to keep SAME Café going. The tradition continues again this fall. Click here to join in on the fun.
