Loras College’s fifth annual Duhawk Day, held May 18, tallied 1,614 donors, once again exceeding its goal of 1,450 donors. The 1,614 mark surpassed the previous Duhawk Day record set in 2015 by 137 donors. The 1,614 individuals included 360 students, an increase of 100 students over last year, and gifts from 38 states. In addition to making gifts, thousands of individuals gathered throughout the United States, uniting at 17 events and informal gatherings throughout the 24-hour campaign.
“Once again, Duhawks proved that Duhawk Day is the best of the best with an overwhelming response,” said Mike Doyle, vice president for institutional advancement/treasurer and a 1991 Loras graduate. “To quote one of my colleagues, ‘it was the best day ever’ and for the past five years, Duhawks across the country answered the call to help us shatter our goal of 1,450 donors in a single day.”
During the 24 hours, friends of the College are encouraged to get together, wear purple and gold and share photos and video from their celebrations using #DuhawkDay on social media or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Updates were posted throughout the day on the Loras College Alumni Facebook Page and other Loras College social media platforms.
Next year will usher in a new era for Duhawk Day as it moves from its traditional May date to Wednesday, March 14, 2018 to coincide with the College’s Heritage Week. Fittingly, after five years, Duhawk Day plays an integral part in expanding the philanthropic mission of the College.
“By hosting Duhawk Day during Heritage Week, we can celebrate Loras’ historic legacy and all Duhawks while providing students with a more prominent role, bringing additional energy to an already energized day,” Doyle explained.
Donations received through Duhawk Day benefitted Loras’ $100 million Inspiring Lives & Leadership campaign—the largest fundraising campaign in the 178-year history of the college. In addition to raising funds to support student aid and faculty/staff professional development, the campaign seeks funds to build upon the launch of its MBA program, business analytics initiative and other academic programs.
