Young Alumni Advisory Board encourages giving back early

President Jim Collins’ (’84) first contribution to Loras was $12.50, which he gave immediately after he graduated.

Just like President Collins, members of the Young Alumni Advisory Board (YAAB) are giving back to the College shortly after graduation – and at record rates. In fact, this past fiscal year (June 1, 2016 – May 31, 2017), Graduates Of the Last Decade (GOLD) donor participation was 21%, higher than the 18% national average.

For the past three years, 100% of YAAB members have supported Loras. Board members are encouraged to help the College with fundraising and alumni relations efforts, and they have all gone above and beyond the call of duty to be leaders in their respective class years.

“This is a huge accomplishment,” says Heather Badovinac (’12) president of YAAB and defense attorney for the Iowa State Public Defender in Waterloo, Iowa. “We are extremely proud of this and it helps us lead the charge with young alums giving back.”

At each board meeting, a representative from the Loras advancement team is invited to present an update on the College’s fundraising efforts, challenges and opportunities Loras faces.

“This helps new Board members buy into the importance of giving back and it reminds returning Board members that fundraising is critical to the success of Loras,” says Badovinac.

While giving back is a point of pride for the YAAB, the Board is also proud that they are contributing to the success of current and future students.

Young alumni contribute to Loras in unique ways. Featured is a group that participates in DuBrew, a homebrew tasting event founded by young alums to support the Loras Fund during Homecoming each year.

“Our hope is that today’s Duhawks will have as great or even better experiences and opportunities than we did during our days on campus, “ Badovinac adds. “Loras shaped us all into the individuals we are today and enhanced our abilities to succeed as young alumni.”

Financial support from alumni and friends make a tremendous impact not only for Loras students and faculty, but also for all those whom the College touches. There has never been a better time to invest in the future of others, especially current Duhawks. Whether the gift is $5 or $500, gifts of any size help ensure an excellent future for Loras.
