DUBUQUE, Iowa – Loras College, Iowa’s first college, has announced the creation of the First Generation Scholars Program to support first-generation college students and their families. The program offers a $1,500 scholarship and strives to promote engagement, study skills, and unique educational opportunities for students successfully progressing toward graduation at Loras.
“First-time students often face unique challenges while pursuing their dream to attend college,” Jim Collins, president of Loras College, said. “After all, they are embarking in unfamiliar territory and paving the path of opportunity within their family.”
The acceptance process includes an application, essay and a letter of recommendation. Awards are renewable with continued program participation. The deadline for applications is April 15.
Full participation includes maintaining satisfactory academic progress toward a degree, living in campus housing while at Loras, maintaining full-time status and agreeing to actively participate in progressive and socially challenging programming, campus activities and career readiness workshops.
The program is a partnership between Loras College and the Puerto Rican Police Association Chicago. The organization will help provide financial support, hold informational sessions in the Chicago area and share mentoring offerings.
“PRPA and Loras share the mission of opening doors to a collegiate career to all students,” said Sergio Perez, director of intercultural programs at Loras College. “Combined, we hope to encourage and support those considering college as the first in their families.”
