Loras College hosts its fourth annual Business Analytics Symposium March 16

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Loras College will host its fourth annual Business Analytics Symposium, the largest of its kind in Iowa, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 at the Grand River Center, 500 Bell St. in the Port of Dubuque. The conference explores how organizations can use data to turn performance and ideas into innovation while prominent practitioners share case studies, explore real problems and find solutions.

“The application of business analytics has never been as pivotal as in our current information-rich and data-driven environment,” said Dan Conway, Ph.D., director of the Loras College MBA program and associate professor of business analytics. “In today’s world of Internet marketing, data warehousing and data and text mining, knowledge of analytics provides an enormous opportunity.”

The symposium begins with Tim Suther, managing director at JP Morgan Chase and a 1982 graduate of Loras College, who will explore the vast opportunities for business analytics available here and abroad. Suther uses data to help ensure the success for one of the leading global financial services firm with assets of $2.4 trillion. He will leave participants with knowledge about identifying these opportunities, prioritizing among them, and positioning themselves and their company to pursue these opportunities

Keynote speaker Rich Clayton, vice president of Business Analytics Product Group at Oracle Corp. and a 1987 graduate of Loras College, has a passion for helping companies transform their operations with analytics and driving change in financial management processes. He’s continuously researching industry trends, interacting with customers and partners, and presenting at finance forums, big data events and analytic symposiums around the world on Oracle’s strategy and the future of analytics. Attendees will learn why aligning analytics with key strategies and mission is critical for success. Oracle services 420,000 customers, including 100 of the Fortune 100.

Attendees can also join breakout sessions, including “Finance: What We can Learn from the Toughest Endurance Bike Race on Earth,” presented by Doug Barton of IBM; “How to Thrive – The Customer Experience Ecosystem,” presented by Cathy Carlson and Bruce Barchus of Vizibility LLC; or “Human Resources: Developing Workforce Skills,” presented by David Charles of John Deere.

Participants can round out the day with hands-on practical experience on data visualization presented by Mitch Campbell, director, Business & Cloud Analytics, for Oracle Corp. The workshop focuses on best practice design and visual techniques to improve ease of use, deployment and adaption of analytic systems by business users.
