DUBUQUE, Iowa – Loras College seniors Shelly Cox, Youngtown, Arizona; Paulina Le, Sherrill, Iowa; and Brittany Miller, Clear Lake, Iowa, received honorable mention at the recent 2016 MinneMUDAC Analytics Competition. The team was one of 25 from colleges and universities across the Midwest that spent several weeks exploring Minnesota water quality and property data.
Judged by more than 75 analytics professionals, eight (four undergraduate and four graduate), winners were chosen based on overall presentation, analytic acumen and serendipitous discovery. The compulsory interviews and presentations mimicked how real-world professionals explain their analysis, rationale and recommendations.
“The best part of this whole competition was seeing how the Loras analytics program compares to other schools and we’re certainly headed in the right direction,” Miller said.
This is the first time this large set of water quality data has been analyzed to this degree, giving student insight greater impact. The competition also gave students a glimpse into the world of data science and gave businesses direct access to the top talent of the next generation of data scientists. Insights found by the participants will continue to be investigated by experts in the respective fields.
MinneMUDAC represents a partnership between MinneAnalytics and the Midwest Undergraduate Data Analytics Competition (MUDAC) and Social Data Science. The contest took place in November in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
