Loras College Responds to Research About its Founder

Message From Loras College President, Jim Collins

A new detailed analysis of Loras College founder Bishop Mathias Loras’ unpublished personal financial ledgers and other historic documents shows for the first time the extent of the Bishop’s participation in the system of slavery, challenging past depictions of him.

Loras College is actively engaging with its campus community and has directed several initial actions to be taken in response. Read President Jim Collins’ Message to the Campus Community to learn more.

Grounded in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and guided by Catholic Social Teaching, the Loras community supports diversity, equity and inclusion and together creates a culture of mutual respect and understanding for one another. This is a shared vision and a shared responsibility inspired by the life of Jesus.

Bishop Loras’ conduct is in complete violation of the mission, vision, values and Catholic identity of this institution. Consistent with these values, Loras College denounces racial injustice and hate in all its forms.
