Loras College Commencement

Commencement celebrates more than 370 new alumni

Dear Loras Alumni and Friends,

On Saturday, May 20, Loras College marked its 178th Commencement ceremony and celebrated more than 370 new alumni. The rain outside didn’t dampen the excitement inside the Athletic & Wellness Center to honor the Class of 2017.

Our Marketing and Media Studies teams were good to stream the ceremony live and have provided the full recording within this communication. They were also kind enough to provide a few links to a few of the “moments” you might especially have interest:

My presidential remarks are found at the 42:22 mark in the 2017 Commencement live stream.

Class President and Commencement Speaker
We were thrilled to welcome back Al Ruffalo, (’69) as our 2017 Commencement speaker. He is Regent Emeritus and CEO of Ruffalo Noel Levitz. He and Loras College Senior Class President Neil Bingham (’17) delivered strong messages that embodied what the Loras mission seeks to instill in our graduates.

Neil’s full remarks are at 54:40.

Al’s son, Paul (’00), introduced his father for the commencement address. Paul’s full remarks are at the 1:03:16 mark.

Al, a first-generation graduate, recounted his uncertainty of starting his college career. His full remarks are at the 1:06:12 point.

Honorary Degree
We had the privilege of bestowing an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Nicholas J. Schrup III (1:18:42). Nick is president of American Trust and Savings Bank and ATBancorp, the holding company for American Trust. The Schrup family has long supported Loras through establishment of scholarships.

Recognition of Professor Emeritus
Janine Idziak, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, and Edward Maslowsky, Ph.D. professor of chemistry, were recognized for their combined 75 years of service to Loras. (1:22.52).

Presentation and Conferring of Degrees (1:24:04)
On behalf of the entire Loras community, thank you for welcoming this class into the alumni network that we all cherish for its faith, reputation, merits, compassion, service, successes and support—values we know are grown in the Catholic, liberal arts experience at Loras College.
