Loras College Dance Marathon raises more than $200,000

DUBUQUE, Iowa – About 300 dancers raised $201,717 reaching their goal during the Loras College Dance Marathon, held Saturday, for the Children’s Miracle Network and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Now in its 11th year, the student-run event has raised more than $1.6 million for the hospital and network.

“Our students’ commitment to Dance Marathon for more than a decade has been unfaltering,” said Kim Walsh, associate dean of students and Loras Dance Marathon advisor. “The event is not just a way to give back, but it’s where new memories are made and new chances to change more lives are found.

A “miracle family,” sharing its experiences with having a child regularly receiving care at the Children’s Hospital, kicked off each hour of the 12-hour marathon.

“It was an unforgettable day full of emotion and exhaustion, but it was worth every second to see the smiles on the kids’ faces,” Daniel Krasich, a junior at Loras College, said. “These kids inspire us more than anyone can imagine, and I’m proud to be working for more miracles as a part of Loras College Dance Marathon.”

Individual participants, through mini-marathons held at area schools, corporate donations and several student-organized events, raised funds throughout the year. Since 2013, the majority of funds raised through Dance Marathon, totaling approximately $500,000, have been directed to the University of Iowa’s Children’s Hospital Building Fund, which is helping to construct a state-of-the-art hospital set to open in December. In recognition of the commitment, the playroom in the perioperative services waiting area will be named in Loras Dance Marathon’s honor.

The marathon also helped fund the Beads of Bravery program. The remainder of donations has been allocated to programs and services as directed by UI Children’s Hospital leadership, including the Room of Magic, Care Packages, NICU Parent Group and CPR kits.
