Loras offered Joshua Delgadillo (’23) the two things he wanted most in a college: The opportunity to wrestle and earn a degree in engineering.
“I had been to Loras three times before because of wrestling camps. I had no idea I would end up coming here, but I am so glad I did,” said Delgadillo. Thanks to the Immigrant Families of Mrs. John Tilp/Frank May Scholarship, he is able to attend Loras with a lesser financial burden and make the most of his Duhawk experience.
Delgadillo grew up in Bloomington, Illinois, after coming to the United States from the Dominican Republic when he was 13.
“My high school wrestling coach, Trevor Kaufman (’10), was a Loras graduate. He told me Loras would be a great fit for me because of its elite wrestling and accredited engineering programs,” Delgadillo said. “It made my decision to attend an easy one.”
As a first-year student, he is unsure what type of engineering he would like to focus on – between biomedical or civil – or even architecture. “Hopefully by the time I get to my junior year, I’ll know what I want to do and from there I’ll probably move to a big city to look for a job.”
For now, he is happy to be making friends and connections with other Duhawks.
“Going to Loras is awesome because it gives you a sense of family and community,” he said. “There are people you meet and you become second family with them because everyone is friendly here. I’ve gone to multiple events and every time I meet someone new because a friend of mine is a friend of theirs.”
The best thing that has happened to him so far at Loras, Delgadillo said, is getting to know head Duhawk wrestling coach T.J. Miller and associate head coach Trevor Kittleson. “The coaches have just pumped me up,” Delgadillo said. “They get you going.”
