Loras College Honors Program will host speaker Duane Hagerty, President and CEO of Heritage Works as he discusses the Loras College Historic District National Register nomination at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 23 on the third floor of The Bill (A ’52) and JoAnne Miller Academic Resource Center. Heritage Works has been collaborating with Loras College since 2017 to have the institution’s campus listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Loras College campus has a rich history of evolution from its early days at the present site in the 1870s to the current day. The buildings on the campus display architectural styles and building construction methods from multiple eras. The development of the campus also illustrates the transition of the academic institution from its original primary purpose of training of young men for Catholic religious vocations, to a modern, coeducational Catholic liberal arts college.
Hagerty’s presentation will explain the process for National Register listing and how Loras College received the Historic Resources Development Program Grant from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs to cover the costs. Hagerty will illustrate the impact that being listed as a National Register Historical District would have on the Loras College campus.
The nomination has been submitted to the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office. It is in the final stages of review with a likely final listing by the National Park Service on the National Register of Historic Places in the Fall of 2019. Loras is the second college in Iowa to receive the district nomination; Cornell College was recognized in 1980.
