Loras College sophomore earns national award

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Rachel Kilburg, a sophomore at Loras College, has earned a Newman Civic Fellow Award from Campus Compact. She is one of just 218 students nationwide to receive the award that recognizes student leaders who inspire their peers, their entire campus and the community where they live.

Kilburg, of Bellevue, a politics and Spanish major, has campaigned for more than 13 different political candidates ranging from a local county supervisor to the President of the United States. As president of the Loras College Democrats, she has played a crucial role in opening political dialogue and fostering bipartisanship on the Loras College campus.

“Rachel’s aspirations to take action, swim against the strong current of partisan politics, work across party lines and engage others to affect growth and change in the political arena brings me great hope for the future,” Jim Collins, president of Loras College, said.

Kilburg also takes her political prowess into the surrounding community through her work with the Dubuque Economic Development Department.

“Growing up in small-town Iowa taught me the importance of civic engagement and I recognized a great need to foster an informed citizenry throughout my community,” she said. “I became passionately politically active at a young age and today I continue to pursue my mission of promoting a politically informed and civically active community on campus at Loras College.”

Kilburg will be recognized at the Loras College Student Awards Luncheon as part of the Legacy Symposium on Wednesday April 27. She will also receive recognition from Campus Compact (www.compact.org), a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents who are committed to improving community life and educating students for civic and social responsibility.

She will be honored at the Iowa Campus Compact Engaged Campus Awards event on May 31 at the University of Iowa.
