DUBUQUE, Iowa – Loras College’s academic theatre honor society, The Guild of Saint Genesis, hosts an original theatre creation competition to kick-off the Loras Players’ 109th season.
The One-Day Play runs one night only, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Auditorium, Hoffmann Hall on the Loras College campus. General admission is $5; Duhawk admission is free. Canned food donations are appreciated.
During a 24-hour lock-in begins Friday at St. Joseph Auditorium and Hoffmann Hall. The One-Day Play (formerly The 1440 Project) pits teams of Loras students against each other in the creation of original one-act plays presented Saturday night.
Student creativity shines under pressure as teams write, direct, perform, design, tech their original productions within the time constraints. Halfway through the lock-in, teams are given a surprise challenge to incorporate into their plays, which may include an unexpected line of dialogue, a featured prop, a new character – nothing’s off limits. Guest judge Art Sunleaf, vice president for student development, will adjudicate and select the best production and performance of the evening.
The One-Day Play is the first performance of the fall season. The additional events, all at St. Joseph Auditorium, include:
• Duprov: The Other Dean’s List – 7:30 p.m., October 16
Improv comedy showcase featuring sketch comedy by Loras students
• Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson – 7:30 p.m., October 31 – November 2
• Oedipus Rex by Sophocles – 7:30 p.m., November 21-23
• A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens – 7:30 p.m., December 7
