Each year Loras College hosts the Annual St. Pat’s Auction to continue to provide service trips at an affordable cost for current and future students who are interested in going on one of these amazing trips. This year’s auction will be held on Friday, March 11th at 5:30 p.m. in the Loras College Ballrooms. The event includes a silent action, a raffle for two Apple watches and a $150 Amazon gift card, as well a fantastic variety of items that will be auctioned off by our exquisite auctioneer Patrick Sperfslage (’12). The items auctioned off are donated to us by Dubuque area businesses, families, students, faculty and you!
In order for us to keep the prices affordable we need your help as well. We welcome any donations you have to offer—it can even be something you’ve made (baked goods, craft items, dinners, etc.) or something you do (a talent such as playing an instrument might deliver a certificate for lessons or a night of entertainment). If you have a talent such as playing an instrument, you can donate a couple lessons or a night of entertainment. Instead of trying to sell that gently used item you’ve had forever on eBay, donate it to the St. Pat’s Auction!
Each year 90 Loras College students and faculty embark on eight different service trips throughout the year to locations including McKee, Kentucky; Chicago, Illinois; Morton, Mississippi, Rutledge, Tennessee; Camden, New Jersey; two trips to New Orleans, Louisiana and Honduras. All of these trips fill up each year and bring back students who have had life-changing experiences and are ready to make an impact on the Loras campus and the Dubuque community.
Many of the students come back with a greater understanding on the world around them, an open mind to the problems they see in their communities, and often a deepened faith. Mary Sutarik (’19) (Aurora, Illinois) made the trip to New Orleans this past J-Term break and said this about her experience, “I realized that building a house is hard work, but with a positive attitude and an open heart, God can work wonders, and help all of us to do things we never thought we’d be able to do.”
Allegra Johnson (’19) (Solon, Iowa) also journeyed to New Orleans and said, “This experience has taught me to be vigilant in actively seeking ways to uphold human dignity and justice in the Dubuque community, and to encourage others to have the same passion for change.”
These are just two examples among many of how service trip experiences shape the minds of students. With your help at the St. Pat’s Auction, we hope to impact many more students like these two.
It is a family-friendly event, so bring the whole family! All are welcome to come, and there will be something for everyone. This event is free and open to the public. Feel free to contact Colleen Kuhl, Director of Campus Ministry, at Colleen.Kuhl@loras.edu or Jesse Coleman (’18) (Des Moines, Iowa) at Jesse.Coleman@loras.edu with any questions.
We are most excited to see you there! Join us on Friday, March 11 at 5:30PM!
