Women’s Basketball Picked to Finish Second


The Loras women’s basketball team begins the 2016-17 season season on Nov. 15 at home in a non-conference contest versus Carthage as the Duhawks look to build off a very successful 2015-2016 campaign.

A year ago, Loras was crowned Iowa Conference Tournament Champions and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the third time in program history. Returning this season for Loras includes three of five starters, as well as 13 letterwinners.

In the Iowa Conference Preseason Poll, the Duhawks were picked to finish second, garnering 57 total points and two first-place votes. Wartburg was the preseason favorite with 63 points and seven first-place votes following the Knights’ run to the Final Four a season ago. Coe is slotted third with 49 points, followed by last year’s regular season champion, Luther, with 39 points. Simpson is right behind the Norse with 36 points, followed by Dubuque (28 points), Buena Vista (22 points), Central (15 points), and Nebraska Wesleyan (15 points).

Head coach Justin Heinzen is set to begin his ninth season with the Duhawks, owning a record of 146-96. Heinzen was recognized by his peers as the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year last season, earning the honor for the second time in his career. Read More
