Wrestling Reaches New Heights at NCAA Regional

2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Regional Day 1 Recap

It was four seasons ago that the Loras wrestling program had finished its fourth regional in Dubuque and had qualified two for the national championships to be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa that year. Since then, the program has undergone a complete overhaul and has started to load its trophy case along the way.

In three seasons, the Duhawks have finished second in each of the regionals, this year by 18.0 points, the closest margin since the beginning of the regional format in 2014. Not only did Loras set a new school record for team points at the regional with 151.5 points, there will be seven representatives at the 2019 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Roanoke, Va. The seven qualifiers match the program record, set in 2003.

Guy Patron Jr. (’20) leads a. mixture of veterans and newcomers to the national tournament. The Harvey, La. native makes his third appearance at nationals, having earned All-American honors in the previous two seasons. Clint Lembeck (’20) and Kevin Kelly (’19) return to nationals for the second time in their careers, with Lembeck finishing fifth and earning All-American status as a freshman in 2017. The final four in Brice Everson (’20), Brandon Murray (’20), Eddie Smith (’20) and Jacob Krakow (’20) all qualified for nationals for the first time.
