Professor Decker has directed and acted in a variety of classical, contemporary, and original plays, musicals, and films. Equally comfortable with intimate, DIY productions, and large stage production-values, in 2008 he co-founded and served for seven years as Artistic Director of Trainwreck Productions, a found-space theatre company, popular for its bawdy musicals and arresting two-handers.
Highlights of Decker’s directing work include The Royale (U. of New Orleans; KCACTF Excellence in Directing, Invited Production; Big Easy-nominated), The Drowsy Chaperone (Grand Opera House), Reefer Madness (Trainwreck Productions), The Last Five Years (U. of Dubuque), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bard-in-the-Yard/UNISTA). My notable acting roles have included The Aliens (Evan; Irene Ryan Acting nomination; KCACTF national awards for Best Ensemble and Best Production; Big Easy nomination for Best University Production), Twelfth Night (Sir Toby Belch), Romeo & Juliet (Friar Lawrence), Gruesome Playground Injuries (Doug), Red (Ken), [title of show] (Hunter), On the Verge (Grover, Baby Yeti, Gorge Troll, Gus), and Chicago (Mary Sunshine).
Decker earned his M.F.A. in Theatre Performance & Directing at the University of New Orleans, where he directed at least one theatre production annually, taught undergraduate Acting and Directing courses for the B.A. Film & Theatre major, and wrote his thesis, Story & Style: Pursuing Excellence on the Academic Stage. In New Orleans, his acting and directing work was featured with professional companies Southern Rep and The NOLA Project. Decker earned a B.A. in Theatre Performance & Acting from the University of Northern Iowa. His online portfolio is available at www.RyanDecker.net.
